Every platform has a different purpose in Digital Marketing. Social Media is a great tool to utilize for companies that has a list of target audience that they want to get engaged with.
A lot of companies think that they only need to place all their budget into one platform, and it will be enough. This is one of the most common misunderstanding when it comes to placing Ads online. There are different purposes for using Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing and Social Media. Let’s take a closer look at each of the main Social Media platform and see what they are usually used for.
One of the largest platforms in the world. It is being used across the globe which also means that there are a lot of potential conversions. The great thing about Facebook Ads is that, I can be very specific in terms of target audiences. For example, I can target demographics, people that liked or follow certain groups on Facebook and certain interests. By using these target options, we can then test out if we have the right target audience as well as information that can achieve a conversion. Facebook is also a great platform for sharing your expertise or providing useful resources for people. If we have an email list, we can do remarketing just for that list of people as well.
One of my favorite platforms. It is simple, easy to navigate and perfect for increasing engagement. Yes, this platform has less users than Facebook, however, the engagement rate per post is higher. The reason is that, people are attracted to pictures first. You know the old saying “A Picture Speaks A Thousand Words”? Well, this is it. This is a great tool to use if you have a question about your brand and wants data from your targeted audience. People tend to reply to Instagram posts a lot more often than Facebook. Companies like to use Instagram to connect with their customers.
People keep telling me that Twitter is not what it used to be, and no one uses Twitter anymore. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Twitter is still one of the most useful tools that you can use for Social Media. There are 313 million unique visitors, and 6.8 million users in Canada. That’s a lot of data that you can gather for your business right there! People still uses Twitter since professionals, celebrities, and large cooperate will use Twitter to do a lot of A/B testing for ideas such as slogans. There are still a significant number of users that use Twitter on mobile phones which means it is a great way to promote apps or test out user interfaces.
LinkedIn is one of my favorite Social Media platforms and I use it almost every day. Unlike Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, LinkedIn is used for connecting with others in a more formal matter. Instead of targeting your ads or post based on interest or demographics, we can target people with specific job titles. This platform is mainly used for B2B advertising. We can even target people with specific skillset. LinkedIn has over 350million users and it is still growing. To me, this is like Instagram but used for business or to show your expertise.
I am so glad that you asked that question. There has been a misconception about what is a Social Media Specialist. This title has been misused for many years and I would love to talk more about it later in my Blog as well. A Social Media Specialist is a person that can help you promote your brand, create user engagement, collect useful data and expand your business through different platforms. It is definitely important to hire someone with those skillsets.

To be honest, no, I am not. I know how to do all those tasks within different social media channels, but I would still not call myself a Social Media Specialist. I am a Digital Marketing Consultant, which means I run Social Media campaigns and supervise others in maintaining those campaigns. However, to me, I believe in order to be a specialist in Social Media, there are a lot of things that you need to do and monitor. It is not just one task. Instead, it is a full-time role that you have to take. I have met a lot of “Social Media Specialists” in the industry and have to admit, there are a lot of people who should not be using this title.
